Nissan Repair - Broken key in ignition

Expert: Calvin Iwashita - 11/7/2009

Question
I recently bought a 1993 Nissan Maxima. Half of the key somehow broke off in the ignition. What are my options to solve this?

Answer
Hi Jeff -

The simplest way is to get a small paper clip, straighten it, and at one end use a long nose pliers to make a tiny "L" shaped hook, like 1/64". Then use it to fish the key out. It will take time and patience, but it should come out. Spraying silicone lubricant into the lock will help you as well.

I used this method in all my 18 years of a mechanic, and has not failed yet.

Good luck -
