Check your intake manifold and exhaust manifold gasket. This problem is very common on the first and second generation Altimas!

Most likely the intake manifold gasket...very common defect.  After the repair the drive cycle will need to be reset and let me tell you it is a ROUGH one.  Involves major speed changes, AC on and off, OD on and off all in a crazy order and the do it AGAIN.  Print out the drive cycle and good luck
