I had the same problem, it's common.  yes it was the tail light sensor in the trunk.  found at the junk yard.

I have a 1989 Nissan sentra and it has this sensor I had decided to wire around it my wife drives this car on her paper route its great on gas and was easy to beef up to handle the extra 1000 lbs every day on route well anyways its only a temp fix after bout 6 months the sensor melts and u lose all rear lights so spend the $100 or $68.79 online
