Non-US Laws/pirate situation

Question
I don't know if you can answer this. It is regarding the
current pirate situation. I have heard two versions of what the merchant ships are allowed: one says they cannot bear arms
and the other says they can. Which is it, do you know? Thanks.

Answer
As far as I know there is no international law regtarding the issue. For this reason, all measures of self defense would have to comply with the laws of the flag´s country. In regard to cases of imaginary self defence each jurisdiction could provide different legal situation.
