Answer
I hope I understood you right. Data protection intends the protection of private data against their use by public authorities and private companies.

In Germany we have the Federal Data Protection Act which implements a respective EU directive. For an English version of this act please check

http://www.bmi.bund.de/Internet/Content/Common/Anlagen/Broschueren/2003/Federal_...

In France, the "loi Informatique et Liberté du 6 jamvier1978, modifiée le 6 aout 2004" serves the same purpose. Please check

http://doc-standarmedia.afnor.fr/etudes/FicheProtectionDPerso_13271511.pdf

The protection of business data as company secrets is regulated in various laws, such as §§ 17 f. of the German Unfair Competition Act (Gesetz gegen den unlauteren Wettbewerb) or §§ 203 f. of the Criminal Code (Strafgesetzbuch).

I hope this helps.
