Question i applied for a federal id number must i apply for a 501 exemption we have 2 fundrasiers a year and we currently have a foundation which wants to donate 2000.00 towards a new scoreboard but they tell us that we must be a 501
Answer The foundation may make their own requirement, for example, that they require that grantees already have received a determination letter from the IRS that the organization is exempt under section 501(c)(3), not as a private foundation. You can inquire from them whether that is, in fact, their requirement and get back to me if you want to establish such status. Is your organization a nonprofit corporation?
