Subject: Qualifying for Medicaid

Question
My father, age 91, is in poor health and currently in a rehab in Fl. My mother, age 87,is in fairly good health is in their paid for condo valued at $75,000. They also own an 8 year old car. They have a $10,000 CD. Their combined income is a little over $1,100 a month (social security).  They have the usual monthly bills.  Is my father eligible for medicaid should he require assisted living?  Thank you.

Answer
Rose,

your father qualifies for nursing home Medicaid and, depending upon where in Florida they reside, other community based programs may be available to them.  Your mother could keep the social security, the cd, condo and car.  Unless a pilot program extends their benefits, typically only nursing home care would qualify.  If your father is a veteran, make sure you apply for veteran's benefits prior to the end of this month.

Good luck and I hope this helps,

Kyla Kelim
