Question can a Director of Nursing work as a nurse on the floor in her facility? Like passing meds ect. and can nurses in nursing homes work 16 hour shifts?
Answer Hi Jamie and thanks for writing,
Yes, a DOC (Director of Care) could work on the floors, it may be part of her job description in a smaller home, or she may be an extra pair of hands as backup when nurses are sick – or it just may be the way some homes use their DOCs.
Yes, some nurses work double shifts, sometimes 12, 14 or 16 hours, but I don’t think it’s healthy and tried to never do more than one double per month, but some nurses I know will do as many as they can get for the money.
