Nursing Home/Long Term Care/Home Care - Long term care v. behavioral beds

Expert: Margot RN BScN GNC - 10/20/2009

Question
I know of a facility in Ohio that has been replacing elder patients with younger, more demanding behavioral patients. This is happening when the older patient moves, recovers, or passes. Slowly, over about a year, the staff's stress (and subsequent health problems) have been increasing until I am afraid that someone -  a patient or staff member - will get really hurt. I have been searching the dept of health's site to find the precise hours/patient/day ratio to see if it increases for behavioral patients or not. I have heard that they wont change their name from a "nursing and rehabilitation facility" to a more appropriate behavioral name because they will have to staff more. I know how many beds they have and the number of RNs, LPNs, & aides. I am hesitant to run and tell on them without merit so I just want to know if what they are doing is legal or not. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Sue,

I did some research for you and found a link which should lead you to the answers you're lokking for.

http://www.odh.ohio.gov/rules/final/f3701-17.aspx

It is a list of the administrative regulations for Nursing Homes and Residential Care Facilities in Ohio.

I hope this helps,
Margot
