Question
Hey, I am 16 and very active. I play both lacrosse and football and have been lifitng and doing cardio for about a year now. I am strong but still would like to loose 10-15 pounds of more weight. I haev recently started supplementing wiht creatine monohydrate and 100% Whey Protein by Optimum Nutrition.
I would like to know if supplementing with these supplements would lead me to gaining more muscle mass and burning more fat.
Thank you for your time,

Luke S.

Answer
Dear Luke, Creatine is an amino acid supplement and whey protein of course, is a great protein source that can be used for muscle repair and growth. The creatine has not been approved in children or teens, so you should really get your doctors approval before taking it. Not all supplements are harmless. You can also call the company and ask them if it's ok for a teen to be taking their product.
Whey protein supplementation along with weight lifting will help you to gain muscle mass. Weight loss will occur if your total calorie consumption is lower than what your energy needs are. Sensing the deficit, the body taps into the fat stores to provide the energy. Lifting weights and gaining muscle mass will increase your daily calorie consumption, so in long run you should lose weight if you are eating the same amount of food. If you try to diet down, you risk losing some hard earned muscle, so it's best to lose weight slowly, like 1/2 to 1 pound per week. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
