Nutrition & Dieting - who can help me plan a medical diet

Expert: Laurie Beebe, MS, RD, LD - 6/30/2009

Question
I am 51 years old, 5'2" and 160 lbs. I have GERD, diverticulosis, Hashimoto's Disease, IBS-C, chronic constipation, internal hemoroids, and constant abdominal pain. What type of professional can I talk to to help me make a healthy meal plan taking all my medical conditions into consideration.

Answer
Dear Laura,

For many of these conditions, the dietary recommendations will be similar.
Your physician should be affiliated with a local hospital that has dietitians who do outpatient consulting.  He will need to write a prescription for your diet order and the dietitian will visit with you to instruct you all about it.  It will probably be covered by your health insurance.

Good luck!
