QUESTION: I just received my #'s for cholesterol
I am 62, always slender, exercise 1hr.5x wk.
total is 226 up from last yr.220(not happy about that)
ldl=115, hdl=101
would you suggest to go on Red Yeast rice to maintain what it is?
I think my diet is pretty good even though I must step up the fruit and veggie where I am lacking.
I don't want to wait until the doc wants me to take meds.
your thoughts please.

ANSWER: Hi Denise even though your Cholesterol is 226 it is off set by your good Cholesterol which is 101 so your fine.  If you are concerned about lowering this you may want to move to a diet that consists more of vegetables, and fruits and get most of your proteins from vegetable protein. If your cholesterol levels are not genetically abnormal then this should bring your numbers back into line.

QUESTION: thank you for the good word... does this mean I should forget about the Red yeast rice supplements?? I read a lot of controversy on it.. especially if it effects the liver.

Red yeast is POSSIBLY SAFE for most people when taken by mouth for up to 3 months. There isn't enough information to know if taking it for longer periods is safe. It can cause stomach discomfort, heartburn, intestinal gas, headache, and dizziness.

Red yeast contains chemicals similar to the prescription drugs called "statins." Therefore, red yeast might also cause side effects similar to statin drugs, such as liver damage and severe muscle pain and muscle damage.

There is also concern about product quality. Many red yeast rice products have been found to contain varying amounts of the statin-like chemicals. Some products may contain none and others may contain high amounts, which are more likely to cause serious side effects.

Serious allergic reactions can occur after breathing in red yeast.

Red yeast that is not fermented correctly may contain citrinin. Citrinin is a poison that may cause kidney damage.
