Nutrition & Dieting - Diet Pills

Expert: Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD LD - 7/30/2004

Question
Hello:

Do the diet pills that are advertised in various magazines and seen in television commercials really help a person lose weight?

I thank you for your answer and any helpful information that you provide.

Answer
I do not believe in or recommend any type of "diet pills" on the market.  First of all many are NOT FDA approved!  Also, if a person is taking prescription medications, many of these "pills" can interact with what they are taking.  Also important is that "diet pills" do NOT teach you anything.  The key to successful and permanent weight loss is lifestyle change.  That takes work and these diet pills advertise themselves and being the quick answer.  There is no quick or magic pill that will help you to lose weight safely and permanently.  You need to make changes in eating habits and exercise habits and that takes time.  Losing weight is not only about weight loss but about better health.

If you are looking for help with weight loss, I do offer online services.  Check out my site at: www.Nutrifocus.net.
Thanks,
Kim Tessmer, RD LD
