Question My girlfriend has been excerising the past month for 5 days a week on an elliptical for approximately 20-30 minutes. She is overweight and has high cholesterol. She has become very disgruntled as she has not lost any weight at all and even sometimes gains weight. She has also taken in less calories and fat in an attempt to lose weight (the weight watchers diet). She also says she doesn't look different in the mirror at all.
She feels like everything she does is not working and she is on the verge of giving up.
She claims the only time she ever lost weight was when she was using "Herbalife." I am very concerned about her health and I would rather her not take some sort of dietary supplement.
My questions are:
1) Why is she not losing any weight at all despite a whole month of dieting and exercising?
2) Are supplements such as Herbalife safe?
3) What would you recommend in order for her to lose weight?
4) Is it possible to do all this exercise and not
Answer Hello Patrick!
Thank you for your nutrition question. Congratulations on your girlfriend taking steps to get healthier. Weight loss involves making small "lifestyle" changes in order to lose weight. This means changing things in our life such eating habits and finding ways to incorporate physical activity into our daily routine.
Weight loss is a very gradual process. In fact, people that lose weight quickly usually put it right back on. Even though she is not losing weight now she will eventually. Is she eating smaller more frequent meals instead of 3 regular meals? Eating mini-meals throughout her day can help because it increases her metabolism(rate which the body burns calories). Her metabolism maybe sluggish right now and needs to be revved up. Does she include light weightlifting in her routine? Working out with 5lb weights daily can help build muscle which will firm her up and also give the metabolism a boost.
There are a couple of websites I would like her to visit which are excellent for weight loss. The first one is www.mypyramid.gov which is where she can create an eating plan to her tastes for losing weight. It will also tell her how many calories she should be eating for weight loss.
The other one is wwww.juiceblend.com where she can purchase a product called Juice Plus which can help her body burn calories better. I have heard of the Herbalife products but there is not enough research to show they help with permanent weight loss. Let me know if you have more questions.
