Nutrition & Dieting - Will One Glass of Whole Milk A Day Kill Me?

Expert: Todd Bublitz, RCEP - 8/3/2007

Question
I am a 52 female and have gone from having what doctors always called perfect cholesterol to very high LDL (overall cholesterol was 192 with HDL of 76, LDL of 109 and triglycerides of 34; current overall cholesterol is 280 with HDL of 86, LDL of 180 and triglycerides of 68).

My doctors are trying to tease out what is going on that my LDL rose so significantly (recently been diagnosed as hypothyroid, which can affect cholesterol levels).

I am taking thyroid mediation and trying to lose weight that I have put on in the last two years.  I have cut out all processed foods, all sugar, all egg yolks, all red meat (although I don't like red meat and rarely ate it anyway), all cheese, etc.

My question is will it kill me to allow myself one glass of whole milk a day if I eat no other saturated fats?  I have been drinking raw milk because I can digest it, while I cannot digest pasteurized milk. (I know I could buy pasteurized milk for the lactose intolerant, but that ultra pasteurized milk tastes so bad that it is not worth drinking).

In the raw milk that I buy there is no lowfat option - just nonfat or full fat.  The full fat raw milk just tastes so yummy, and it helps me to maintain my diet since I have it as my late night snack as a reward for eating healthy all day (and I cut calories elsewhere to make room for the extra calories in full fat milk).

So will one glass of whole milk kill me?

Answer
Barbara,

One glass of whole milk a day will not kill you.  If you are eating an appropriate number of calories and keeping your saturated fat within an acceptable limit, you should be able to drink your milk.

Many people will argue that there are better and/or more nutritious ways to get your calories and fat, but you can do as you wish.  It's your body and your life.

Personally, I think that 2% milk is devilishly thick and creamy, since I usally drink 1% milk.  To each his, or her, own.

Best wishes.

Todd
