Nutrition & Dieting - HONEY

Expert: Kimberly A. Tessmer, RD LD - 4/22/2007

Question
How does a table spoon of honey compare to a table spoon of sugar or high fructus corn syrup in terms of calories, carbs and overal nutrition and energy

Answer
As far as its composition, all three are sugar and nothing else.  As far as calories/energy, 1 Tbsp of honey is 63 calories (13.5 carbs) and sugar is 45 calories (12 g carb).  Honey weighs slightly more than table sugar so it has slightly more calories and carbs.  However, honey is sweeter than table sugar so you don't have to use as much.  High fructose corn syrup is basically the same as table sugar.  Table sugar is "sucrose" and HFC is "fructose".  They are very similiar.  All sugars nourish your body in the same way.

All three of these are added sugars and should be used in moderation within a healthy diet.
