Question I make a nutrition drink for my breakfast everyday. It includes one raw egglands best egg. Egglands best are high in vitamin E, have 100 mgs of Omega 3s and have 25% less saturated fat than regular eggs. My wife says I shouldn't be eating an egg every day because of the cholesterol. Do you think its ok for me to eat one of theses eggs every day? Also, is it safe to eat it raw?
Answer Patrick,
Eating an egg every morning will use up a lot of your daily recommended amount of dietary cholesterol. One egg yolk has about 213 mg of cholesterol. Egg whites don't contain cholesterol and are good protein sources, so they're fine. It is recommended that the healthy adult not eat more than 300 mg a day of dietary cholesterol (those with cardiovascular disease should keep it to 200 mg a day). If you eat very little meat the rest of the day (every day), you could eat one egg every morning and still be within the recommendations. This is up to you.
You should always eat your eggs cooked, never raw. According to the Centers for Disease Control: "Stringent procedures for cleaning and inspecting eggs were implemented in the 1970s and have made salmonellosis caused by external fecal contamination of egg shells extremely rare. However, unlike eggborne salmonellosis of past decades, the current epidemic [2005] is due to intact and disinfected grade A eggs. The reason for this is that Salmonella enteritidis silently infects the ovaries of healthy appearing hens and contaminates the eggs before the shells are formed."
You never know when an egg with Salmonella will come your way. Don't take the chance.
I thought that eating raw eggs went out of style. I don't think that I ever saw Rocky drink raw eggs after the first movie. I would recommend against it because there are other nutritious options without the cholesterol and risk of Salmonella.
