Nutrition & Dieting - exercise and breathing

Expert: Todd Bublitz, RCEP - 2/4/2006

Question
hi,
this is a silly question :)
If instead of doing exercises to loss weight,I stil breathing successively and rapidly , will I burn fats as if i was doing exercises?

Answer
Fat Man,

Losing weight happens when a person burns more calories than they consume (eat and drink).  The number of calories you burn is determined by your resting metabolic rate (the calories needed to maintain bodily functions – digestion, breathing, etc.) and the physical exercise and activity you engage in.  Rapid breathing will burn more calories than slow breathing, but as a replacement for exercise – it is silly.  Almost as silly as blinking or toe tapping as a replacement for exercise.  Don't plan on burning any fat with your rapid breathing either.  By the way, breathing rapidly enough to burn a significant number of calories should cause you to “blow off” too much carbon dioxide and cause you to become light-headed or pass out.  I would recommend against that.

I recommend the only tried and true approach - eat less and exericse.

Todd
