About Terence A. Russell
Expertise
I am more experienced about the actual and realistic effects of malnutrition on the body, than about nutrition and dieting. I can answer questions about what happens to anorexics at the end of their lives.

Experience
I was married to, and lived daily with a anorexic during the last years of her life, seeing the devastation of the physical acts on the end and the effects of what families go through. I am highly educated in another area, but feel my life experience in this area might be of some use to some of you.

Nutrition & Dieting - safe weight loss

Expert: Terence A. Russell - 12/13/2004

Question
Hello Again-

I'm not on a binge diet or anything- if that's why you're wondering.

Some friend and I were discussing our workouts and fat loss.  Everyone knows someone who has
lost like, 20 pounds in a month or somthing like that and we were arguing about water weight.

I read some place, ages ago, that the body was only capable of burning about 1.5 LBS of actual
fat in a 30 day period.  I could not back that up and could not find any reference on the net.

I guess a more clear question would be: how many calories equals a pound of fat.  I know that's
not an easily answered question b/c I don't know if, when I am exercising, if I burned 300
calories on the tread mill, if those were fat calories or all calories...

anyway, thanks again for answering my question!

Question -
do you know what the maximum amount of fat that the body
can burn per month is?- generally, how fast can the body burn
fat?
Answer -
Hi Robb,

I am sure there is not clear cut answer to your questions, as I am almost sure with enough effort
and such, a person could burn up every gram of fat in their body within a month. It would not be
fun and it would not be healthy and it would likely have to be done under duress.

Again, exactly how fast would also depend upon how strenuously one exercised, how much
additional calories one was intaking during the process, and how efficient such person's
metabolism was.

Now, exactly why were you seeking answers to these questions?

Answer
Hi again, back at ya!

Well, thankfully you are not tryin' to starve yourself to death, which is why I asked. Now that I know what you want, I can tell you I definitely am not expert enough in the actual field of nutrition to answer such. I actually got involved in this expert site 3 years or so ago simply to be able to counsel people with anorexia following my late wife's premature demise from battling that disease for years.

I apologize if you were misled in any way.
