Nutrition & Dieting - unexplained weight loss

Expert: Rev. Dr. Abbott - 9/8/2004

Question
I AM 26 YEARS OLD AND 5'6 I WEIGH 119 POUNDS. I JUST HAD A BABY A YEAR AGO. BEFORE I WAS PREGNANT I WASW AT 135 TO 140. I EAT ALL THE TIME MY APPETITE HAS INCREASED BUT YET I KEEP LOOSING THE WEIGHT. I DON'T LOOK SICK OR BAD. BUT I DON'T WANT IT TO BE A HEATH PROBLEM BECAUSE I HAVE ALWAYS WORKED AT STAYING SLIM AND NOW I DON'T FOR LAST YEAR. I DO TAKE B-12 SHOTS EVERYWEEK. IS IT THE B-12 SHOTS THAT IS MAKING ME LOOSE WEIGHT?

Answer
B12 is a gimmick for weight loss (but it doesn't work).  In fact, few people actually need B12 supplements, but there's lots of willing 'sales', promotions of product, questionable sources of these injections.  So, first thing I'd do is find out why you're getting the shots.  There are limited conditions that actually warrent these supplements, such as pernicious anemia, macrocytic or megoblastic anemia and some others.  Vegans, who refuse meat, fish, dairy/eggs, poultry can often have this deficiency; alcoholics may have a B12 deficiency and so on.

B12 injections for these reasons will stop when the underlying source of the cause is corrected (a corrected diet, treatment of disease, etc.).

So, assuming that you have a medical cause for low B12 levels, it is probably THIS that is contributing to your weight control problem (loss of weight is as much a problem as too much weight, as you now know).  B12 isn't contributing to the weight loss - please talk to your physician (M.D.) about what's really going on and what you can do about it.

You don't have to LOOK bad to have a serious health problem.

Meanwhile, if you're exercising and developing/toning muscle, this will naturally increase your metabolism and contribute to almost effortless weight control.  If this is how you're living, well, ENJOY the ease of weight control.
