About Susan Lee Ottevanger, Wellness Coach
Expertise
There is nothing on earth more important than your body, your health. With a little knowledge, there is nothing in life you have more power, more control over. If you are tired of feeling bad, stop eating badly. Most of what we eat most of: only a human mistakes this stuff for food. Distinguish real, satisfying food from the mere flavored packing material that keeps you hungry. If you`ve been on every diet twice and are going crazy, I can give you a path to Peace in the Kitchen.

Experience
In the late '80's my weight up and down reached a crisis. Arthritus in my back made it painfull to move. Balancing blood sugar had me eating more often. Eating more, moving less, miserable. My doctor smiled, said "just move more and eat less". This from a medical professional about to burst his buttons. Not a working plan. I knew I had to write my own, so I started researching what was new to put with what sorta worked for me in the past. Eat protein, eat carbs, just not at the same time. Never go around hungry, listen to your body, it can tell you what it needs.

Nutrition & Dieting - weight loss and the pill

Expert: Susan Lee Ottevanger, Wellness Coach - 4/10/2004

Question
Hi Susan
I have a real "head scratcher" of a problem.  Every time I go off the pill, I start gaining weight.  I go back on the pill and the weight gain stops.  I don't lose any mind you, but I stop gaining.  Each time I go off I gain more weight and gain it faster.  I went off last Aug and in a few short months have put on yet another 19 lbs.  I'm blowing up faster than a helium balloon.  I have a Dr.'s appt Monday but the last time I told him about this he shrugged his shoulders and said I was opposite everyone else.  Any idea how I can fix this.  I was advised to go off the pill cause I'm over 40, over weight, and smoke!

Answer
Hi Bonny-Jean,

Off the top it sounds like your body thinks it needs to eat for 2 - yes, the opposite of being on the pill which makes your body chemically like it is pregnant. Some psychological issues?

It can be tough to be taken seriously in a vague health concern when one is a smoker, they just write you off as not really caring about yourself. It may be that, or just waiting for you to level off - the weight gain some, not all, people experience when they quit smoking is usually minor and rarely lasts more than a couple months, so the gain after getting off the pill might have been expected to do the same.

Best Regards,
Susan O.
