Hi, I am 12 weeks pregnant and have been diagnosed with bacteria vaganosis. My doctor perscribe me with oral metronidazole to take 3 times a day for 7 days. The doctor said that is was safe to take during pregnancy but I have read a lot of things that said it is not safe. I need a second opion and am very appericate for your response.

Answer
Metronidazole (Flagyl) is safe for use during pregnancy. You can also use metronidazole gel (Metrogel) or Cleocin vaginal suppositories during pregnancy for bacterial vaginosis.  We have used both of these medications for years and they are the only approved treatment for BV during pregnancy (by the CDC).
