Question
hello.
i would like to ask, what is this white sticky stuff that's coming out in my vagina?
it doesn't have foul odor or anything.

does it mean i'm ovulating?
how would i know if i'm ovulating?
if i have this stuff, does that mean i'm pregnant?

Answer
Dear Daphnie,

Cervical mucus naturally changes throughout your cycle. The first few days following menstruation, there will be little or no discharge present. You will feel dryness around your vulva. During this time, chances of getting pregnant are low. The first discharge that does appear (usually around CD 10-11) should be moist or sticky and should be white or cream in color. During this transition time, first the mucus will become cloudy and slightly stretchy during the finger test (this means that it will still break before the fingers are stretched all the way). As time progresses, the mucus will become greater in volume. In the few days leading up to ovulation, cervical mucus resembles egg whites. It is the thinnest, clearest and most abundant at this point in the cycle. Ovulation typically takes place on CD 14 of a 28 day cycle. After ovulation mucus returns to the sticky stage (does not stretch during finger test) and there can again be a feeling of dryness around the vulva.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.

Expertise

I have been an R.N. since 1988 and come from a family of nurses. I have clinical experience in labor and delivery, as well as post-partum care and pre-term pregnancy complications. I have also worked in Community Health Clinics dealing with this area of expertise, including WIC (Women, Infant, & Children) clinics performing nursing evaluations and assessments in determining a need for services or intervention for pregnant women, newborns, and young children. I have worked in immunization clinics in and around my community as well. I also have several years experience in OB and Pediatric Home Care Nursing. In addition to that, I am a mother of two, ages 21 and 16, both of which I had hoped would be vaginal deliveries, but ended up being C-Sections... one of which had me in pre-term labor...another which was frank breech (bottom first)... one who rejected the breast... and so on... to list my personal experience would be a bit lengthy! I'd simply like to help anyone who might have a question or concern that I can draw on my expertise to answer!
