Subject: HCG and Progesterone Levels

Question
I had extremely light brown spotting around 4 weeks, and it went away after about 2 days. (It wasn't even enough to cover half a panty liner, far less actually) Anyway...I had my HCG and Progesterone Levels tested and here is what they read:

4 weeks -154 HCG and 28 Progesterone
4 weeks and 4 days-1323 and 19 Progesterone!!!!!
6 weeks and 4 days-52,000 HCG

Are my levels okay? They seem a bit low for being 6 weeks and 4 days. Also, why would my progesterone DROP? The doctor says its probably a lab fluctuation, but I'm worried.

I've had a little morning sickness this week, on and off. But this morning I wake up and its gone. My breasts are not tender, but fuller. I have aversions to food, but no vomiting. I also have had no cramping or spotting since 4 weeks.

I don't have an ultrasound till next week and I am so nervous that something could be wrong with me. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help! Does this sound normal? DO you think my baby is okay from what I have said?

Please help!

Thank you!

-First time mommy!

Answer
Dear Stacey

Variations in hVG level is a normal finding and your values are reassuring as they show a rising trend. On the other hand, progesterone levels should not drop but if measurements were taken in 2 different labs, then variations are likely as your doctor said. Variations are unlikely with the same lab.

If I am in the place of your doctor, I would go for a transvaginal ultrasound to make a proper diagnosis and /or prescribe natural progesterone tablet especially because your levels are dropping and may, at a time, be insufficient to support the growing embryo in your endometrium and continue till the time he/she plans to scan you.

I wish you a safe and successful pregnancy.
