About Tandi
Expertise
I can answer questions about ovulation, conception, luteal phase problems, infertility, early pregnancy, miscarriage, fertility medications, 1st trimester pregnancy issues, and most other fertility issues. I can also answer questions about premature birth and micro-premature babies. I cannot answer questions about birth control or elective abortions. My knowledge is also limited in regards to other medical conditions, so I may or may not be able to answer questions on how they relate to fertility. Also, I am only familiar with fertility medications used in the United States, so I may not be able to answer your questions about foreign medications.

Experience
I am an RN who has worked extensively with neonates in the NICU as well as fertility treatments and miscarriage.

Education/Credentials
I received my nursing degree in 2003 from New Mexico State University.

Question
I have always had strange cycles, to say the least. When I first started, I could go for three months before I had another period. It was eventually regulated through birth control, and when dh and I decided to get pregnant so I came off the pill. The first 6 months I was very regular, and we used protection because we were waiting a few cycles before we tried. As soon as we started having unprotected sex, my periods stopped completely. They had to give me provera and clomid, and I got pregnant the first month.

When I had my son in December of 2006, my periods became very normal, very reliable even without birth control. In February of this year, dh and I started having unprotected sex again, and wouldn't you know it.. my periods stopped. I thought that I was pregnant at first, but test after test showed negative. I didn't *feel* pregnant either, and I did right away with our son. I saw the doctor, he gave me provera to start my period and put me on birth control to regulate it. I wasn't exactly trying to conceive, but I wasn't trying not to either. I would like to be able to have a period without birth control, but I don't know what the cause is.

So my question is this: Why is it that my period stopped right after having unprotected sex, even though it didn't result in pregnancy? When we have protected sex, it's completely normal.

Answer
Stacy,
I am sorry for my delayed response, I have had a sick baby and been out for a few days unexpectedly!  My husband came home from being gone (he is in the Marine Corps) last night so I have a little bit of time tonight!

As far as your lack of menses, I am not sure how to answer this question.  Amenorrhea is typically a result of hormonal problems, which can be caused by things like thyroid problems, Too high or low FSH or progesterone, etc.  These are things that need to be evaluated with a blood test.
However, it is not typical for amenorrhea to be caused by the exposure to sperm.  I would suspect a possible allergic or otherwise immune system response to your husband's sperm that could lead to low fsh, but this would not really fit you being able to get pregnant with your son.  I hate to not give you a real answer, but I am perplexed by your issues.  I would recommend a work-up by a reproductive endocrinologist to determine if you are having some sort of reaction to sperm, maybe one that only lowers your FSH, and the clomid counter-acted that when you got pregnant with your son.

It is the most plausible reason I can find for your current dilemma.

I wish you the best of luck and I hope that you have success in your trying to conceive journey soon!
