Question Hello, I am 15 weeks pregnant and I have been diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis. I am terrified by what I have read online. I am being treated by an oral dose of metronidazole twice a day for seven days. My question is what is the increased risk statistically? Since I am being treated will I still be at risk? What are the chances of late second trimester miscarriages because of BV and will treatment help lower the risk?
Since I am being treated if the bacteria did spread up to the baby will the antibiotic help that too?
Please help I am trying to stay calm...there just isn't much I can do about it and I don't know what caused it. I just want a happy healthy baby. I am very anxious since this has been a long journy .

Answer Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) can in fact cause some complications during the pregnancy. In some cases, women have had premature rupture of the membranes, preterm labor or rarely miscarriage. Some patients do just fine with treatment. It is unknown why some women miscarry while others do not have many complications as a result of BV. The antibiotic will help you both. Luckily the baby has a placenta to protect him/her from this infection. It is crucial at this early point of your pregnancy that you follow your OB's instructions though. This is simply going to be a hurdle along the way that you will most likely overcome with a great and joyous outcome. Medical technology is so amazing now versus even 10 years ago that we are able to curb so many more difficulties and create a positive outcome. I wish you the best of luck.
