Question I've been diagnosed with a low-lying, anterior placenta. Placental edge to internal os distance is between 1 and 2 cm, so I am facing a cesarean. Since it is anterior, they will have to go through the placenta. What additional risks, if any, are there for myself and the child? I fear that cutting through the placenta would significantly increase my blood loss, but my worst fear is that it could compromise the baby's blood supply before she can breathe, potentially leading to hypoxia and brain damage. Are my fears unreasonable?
Answer Hi Lola,
These fears are not unreasonable. If you severely hemorrhage, you will be given a blood transfusion. Your baby may be given steroids to mature the lungs. Nobody can predict the outcome but with proper medical attention, you and your baby will most likely be fine.
