ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - Navel - clitoris connection?

Expert: Dr. Harriet Johnson - 10/30/2009

Question
Hi Dr. Johnson,
I have noticed a connection between my navel and my clitoris for as long as I can remember -- I have a small navel and when I would clean it with Q-tips, the deeper I went into the navel the more it felt like there was a string connecting the navel to my clitoris. It wasn't a necessarily pleasurable sensation, just a feeling of pressure.

I am now 34 weeks pregnant and the baby is moving around quite a bit. Lately I have been feeling a lot of pressure on my navel from the inside and it creates a shooting pain down to my clitoris. The only way I can think to describe it is that it feels like a string is wrapped around the clitoris and being yanked from the navel whenever there is any pressure on the navel (from the inside or outside).

I have done some internet searches on this and found a few forums where other women have mentioned a similar feeling, but I haven't founded anything on any reputable medical site. Do you know anything about this? If so, is it normal? Is there anything I can do to reduce the connection?

Thanks in advance,
Danielle

Answer
Hi Danielle,

This is normal. There is no 'string' attached from your navel to your clitoris. Basically it's just a nerve, many women experience this but it's nothing to worry about. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do to reduce the connection.
