ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - altered menstrual cycle by pills

Expert: Dr. Harriet Johnson - 10/20/2009

Question
Hi, I have been on the birth control pill Levore for almost 2 years and just a few months ago I found out that I can alter my menstrual cycle and instead of having it every month I can have it every 3 months by taking the active pills only and not the pink sugar pills. However, for a little over a week now I have been having light red discharge with no smell. Is this a sign of pregnancy? Because as of lately I've been stressing out at school (I am a pre-med student) and have not been taking it exactly on time everyday. Instead I take it like an hour or two late.

Answer
Hi Stephanie,

If you are experiencing this when your period is due, then it is normal as sometimes you will spot when taking the active pills. It could be implantation bleeding, that usually lasts for 1-2 days, take a pregnancy test. It may just be your hormones, however I am pretty sure it is due to the change in your birth control.
