Currently I am working as a Professor of Obstetrics gynecology, Menofyia University, Egypt. Since 1987, I worked in many university and private hospitals with a high load of pregnant population averaging 7-9,000 deliveries/year. I had my doctorate degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1996 in the use of Doppler ultrasound in high risk pregnancies.

ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - bleeding after miscarriage

Expert: Mohamed Kandeel - 10/27/2009

Question
4 weeks ago I had a miscarriage. I bled for about 10 days then the bleeding subsided to spotting. A few days ago, the bleeding increased (bright red) like a light period. Does the continued and increased bleeding indicate an incomplete miscarriage (retained tissue) Also, my hCg levels have not decreased to below 5 (htp still reading positive)
Thanks Christine

Answer
Dear Christine

The level of hCG may take up to 4 weeks to go back to nonpregnant level and may never returns back to zero (5 is quite normal). No one can ever tell if you miscarriage is incopmlete except after examination by ultrasound. The symptoms you dscribe of increased spotting after being stopped are suggestive for some remnants of pregnancy still inside your uterus. Therefore, i advise a transvaginal ultrasound for proper diagnosis.

Good Luck
