ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - estrogen cream

Expert: Dr. Harriet Johnson - 10/19/2009

Question
Dear Dr. Johnson,

I am 53 years of age and going through pre-menopause (I still get my period and lately even 2 x a month).  I started having painful sex after I recently had a (cyst?) removed.  I was told I have a skin condition of thinning of the vaginal skin which tears every time I have sex.  The ob-gyn suggested I try Premarin estrogen vaginal cream.
My sister whom has had breast cancer is dead set against it. She states her Cancer Dr. said no to any type of estrogen supplement whether you have cancer or not.
What are your feeling and do you have any suggestions for my problem besides lubricant.
Thank you

Answer
Hi Karin,

You can use Astroglide, Replens. Plantain ointment helps restore moistness and elasticity. Daily doses of 100–600 IU of vitamin E for 4–6 weeks can help you increase vaginal lubrication. I advise trying these before you use Premarin cream, if however you do end up needing to use Premarin cream, using it occasionally instead of regulary decreases the chance of cancer. Good luck!
