ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - fibroids

Expert: Dr. Harriet Johnson - 10/30/2009

Question
I have a question relating to fibroids (tumors) in and outside the uterus.  I found out I have several outside and one inside. Would this affect me if I decide to get pregnant? Also, what may I do for the uncomfortable pain I get?

Answer
Hi Zina,

These fibroids are typically harmless and cause few complications. Occasionally, however, uterine fibroids can cause problems during pregnancy. Most pregnant women who have fibroids will not experience any complications with their pregnancy. However, fibroids during pregnancy do increase your risk of miscarriage or pre-term labor slightly.

To reduce the pain don't take anything with estrogen in, this can make them grow faster. Try to eat a good, healthy balanced diet and avoid eating processed meats. Heat treatment is an excellent form of pain relief. Try using a heat pad on the abdomen and gently massage the affected area.

You can have these surgically removed, however I advise you don't as they will re-grow after a few months and can cause more complications, leading to you maybe needing a hysterectomy. Good luck!
