ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - pregnant?

Expert: Dr. Harriet Johnson - 10/23/2009

Question
I am a bit confused right now. My period is over due almost 3 weeks . Pregnancy test 2 days ago was positive with a faint line ,but very visible. So appointment today with my doctor ,urine test and ultrasound negative.
Definetely have pregnancy symptons similar to my previous ones (2). doctor told me that there I am for sure are not pregnant and wants to see me in 4 weeks again!
I am 40 now and really would like to have some more answers before 4 weeks time.
I always had a regular 28 cyclus and no idea what this is ,if not pregnant? Is the ultrasound possibly too early and the simple urine test instead of a proper blood test not suffiecent?
Thanks for your consideration.

Answer
Hi,

There is a possibility that you are too early to detect pregnancy, however ultrasounds can detect almost all pregnancies. There is no such thing as a false positive pregnancy test so I believe you were pregnant, however the baby may have stopped developing, which would explain the negative pregnancy test and the negative ultrasound. All you can do is wait and see what happens at your next doctor appointment. Good luck!
