ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - Unexplained menstrual cramping/Confused and in need of Answers

Expert: Dr. Harriet Johnson - 11/7/2009

Question
I am 35 and have experienced gradually intensed cramps with my menstrual cycles since Jan. of 2009. Normally I never experience cramps and if I have in the past they havent been uncomfortable and only happened a few times in a year.  After giving birth to my only child 12 years ago. My menstrual cycles have been really heavy.  Since January they have been more heavy than normal and accompanied with the cramps.  In October, I almost thought that I was pregnant because the cramps which started before my period the first week in October until my period this month the cramps which felt like actual pre-labor contractions have continued non-stop since then.  The reason that I thought I may have been pregnant and did not know because I did have sex on Jan. 17, 2009 and again in June 19, 2009.  But the man that I sex with both times had a vesectomy, but that was the only protection that we used.  Since that time, I have been tested for all STD's and they came back negative, I had a blood and urine pregnancy test that came negative. I went to the doctor and they checked to see if I had a urinary tract infection and that was negative.  They tested my thyroid because I have been extremely tired and cold all the time and that came back normal. My last period was real abnormal because it started out with brown clumps then it was heavy for 3 days when my norm lately has been 5-7 days. Then I noticed larger that normal blood clots with my period.  Since I had my daughter, I've always had clots but these seemed a little larger than usual. I just need to know what direction or physician to seek to find out why I continue to have lower back contraction like pain and abdominal cramping for an entire month if I'm not pregnant. Oh and I also brought a store fetal heart beat monitor and I continue hear large loud thumps on this monitor that they claim according to the directions are movements from a baby that I'm not carrying.

Please help because, I am going crazy with pain and unexplainable symptoms.

Answer
Hi Lisa,

First of all you need an ultrasound to find out what is going on. I think you may have a uterine polyp, you have all the symptoms and an ultrasound will detect this. Polyps can be surgically removed. If cancerous cells are discovered(which is very rare), a hysterectomy may be performed. You definitely need to visit your doctor, if your doctor will not give you an ultrasound, visit a different doctor until you get the help you need. Good luck and let me know how this goes.
