ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - ultrasound dating

Expert: Dr. Harriet Johnson - 11/7/2009

Question
Hi my name is emily i have been worried about this for a long time and when i ask my doctors i get diffrent unclear answers so your help would be greatly appreciated. I am 25 weeks 3 days pregnant. I had a positive pregnancy test on 6/9/09 on 6/18/09 i had a vaginal ultsound done because i was having light spotting the ultrasound only saw a intrauterine gestational sac that measured 3 millimeters they could not tell me how far along i was my hcg levels at that time were 600.

we did a retest of the hcg levels on 6/23/09 thet were 2,839 on 6/29/09 they were 7,954.

on 7/29/09 i had another ultrasound done and was told i was 11 weeks and 1 day pregnant.

another ultrasound done 9/17/09 said i was 18 weeks 4 days and one on 10/5/09 said 20 weeks and 6 days so they are matching with my feb 16th 2009 due date.

my problem is on 5/29/09 i slept with someone we used a condom and he did not ejaculate that same day i slept with my boyfriend we did not use protection or contraceptives he pulled out. i am worried this may not be my boyfriends baby we have been together a long time i have never been pregnant before. my periods are irregular my lmp that i remeber was suposed to be 3/26/09 but it came 4/1/09 i cant remeber getting one after that but usally i am on top of that so i believe i got one early may but dont rember. in early june i was worried because it didnt come so i  tested and came out positive.i can't see me going that long with out a period and not testing sooner so i must have gotten one in early may.

I asked my doctor when i concieved 1st he said 5/12-5/19/09 I thought he was going by the ultrasound till i asked him again because they said i my lmp was 5/12/09 which i don't understand how they are getting that since i don't remember and he said i concieved most likely 5/26/09-6/1/09 so i asked if the ultrasound date they have been giving me added two weeks for conception 1st he said no then he said yes. so my questons are
1. does an ulttrasound tell you your lmp
2. does an ulttasound add 2 weeks to the actual fetal age(time spent in uteris)
3. based on my ultrasound when did i concieve could this be the other guys baby

please help answer my questions i am worried every day about this your time is greatly appricated thank you

Answer
Hi Emily,

An ultrasound doesn't predict your LMP, however going off your dates, your doctor can predict roughly when your LMP was. Yes, they do because a pregnancy is always measured from the LMP, even if you don't know when it was. For example, from conception, pregnancy is 38 weeks, whereas from the LMP it is 40 weeks. I can't predict who your baby's father is as you had sex with both of them on the same day, sorry.
