ObGyn/Pregnancy issues/Miren IUD

Question
After giving birth in 7/06, I got the Mirena IUD in 8/06.  I finally got the awful thing out in 2/09, after practically begging for it to be out since about 10/06.  I had the problems I have found many others had; awful cramps, bloating, weight issues, acne, depressions, sleepy, and pain.  Since I've had it out I have felt ok but the last few weeks it's been just like it was before.   It's been really hard for me to deal with, and my husband by now just thinks I'm a crazy, moody wife and that i make it up all the time about the pain.  My question is about "post mirena" problems and good natural ways to fix the problems[same as listed above].  I went to my Dr, but she wrote out a prescription to anti depressants [not interested!]. Any advice would be so helpful!!  Thanks and have a good day!

Answer
Dear Andrea,

If the Mirena was removed four months ago, you should be starting to feel a reduction in the hormonal symptoms which you described. Those symptoms are typically related to hormone fluctuations. Are you on any other type of hormonal birth control now? Any other type of hormonal birth control will cause the same type of symptoms.

However, other than medication to relieve some of those symptoms - and believe me, I have seen MIRACLES happen with anti-depressant medication - I would advise exercise, a healthy diet, and adequate sleep. Moderate exercise of 30-60 minutes per day will release endorphins which can elevate mood and obviously has positive effects on the physical body. A healthy diet, low in fats and sugars, will help with the bloating and weight issues. And I cannot say enough about the need for eight hours sleep at night. And the thing is - even if you are having trouble sleeping at night, if you exercise every day you will reduce sleep problems and enjoy a much more restful night's sleep as well.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.

Expertise

I have been an R.N. since 1988 and come from a family of nurses. I have clinical experience in labor and delivery, as well as post-partum care and pre-term pregnancy complications. I have also worked in Community Health Clinics dealing with this area of expertise, including WIC (Women, Infant, & Children) clinics performing nursing evaluations and assessments in determining a need for services or intervention for pregnant women, newborns, and young children. I have worked in immunization clinics in and around my community as well. I also have several years experience in OB and Pediatric Home Care Nursing. In addition to that, I am a mother of two, ages 21 and 16, both of which I had hoped would be vaginal deliveries, but ended up being C-Sections... one of which had me in pre-term labor...another which was frank breech (bottom first)... one who rejected the breast... and so on... to list my personal experience would be a bit lengthy! I'd simply like to help anyone who might have a question or concern that I can draw on my expertise to answer!
