ObGyn/Pregnancy issues/Appetite & Weight Gain Concern After Birth

QUESTION: I only gained 6lbs during pregnancy and my daughter weighed just shy of 6 lbs at birth. I was back to pre-pregnancy weight immediately. However, my appetite has been much greater since giving birth 5 weeks ago and I've gained almost 2lbs. I'm breastfeeding exclusively and understand I need to consume more calories, but I thought breastfeeding causes you to lose weight. I'm concerned about gaining weight.

ANSWER: Let me know your age, height, and weight, and I'll run the numbers for you to calculate your needed caloric intake.

QUESTION: I am 39 (40 in September).  This is my second child...oldest is 22 yrs. I'm 5'1" and weigh 134.5  I'm drinking a minimum of 64ozs of water per day but I am eating a lot more than before...even when pregnant. Thank you!

At 5'1", you have a BMI of 25.3, which just puts you ove the edge into the overweight category, so I can see why you'd be concerned about putting on more pounds now. The second and third trimesters of pregnancy demand an additional 300 calories over mom's regular metabolism, while BFing needs 500, which is a 60% increase. So it makes sense that you'd be hungrier now.
But since you have plenty of stored fat on you body now, and BFing is well established, you can safely eat 1600 to 1700 calories per day. This will put you on a slow and steady 2 - 3 pounds per month.
