ObGyn/Pregnancy issues/Belly binding

What are your views on the efficacy of belly binding (e.g., the belly bandit) as part of post-natal care?

Postpartum belly binding has been used for centuries, across numerous cultures, as a part of standard maternal care. That said, I have read of no studies which either confirm, or deny, the benefits of the practice. So in my mind, it's a grey area.
I suspect that belly binding could be helpful in the initial postpartum period, to provide support the internal organs and possibly offer some degree of support for the lower back. But belly binding certainly can not take the place of rehab exercises. For this reason, I doubt that belly binding can have a long term effect on the shape or functioning of the abdominal wall.
