ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - Diflucan and Pregnancy

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 11/23/2005

Question
Hi. My name is Michelle. I am 7.5 weeks pregnant. On 10/13/05 I took one Diflucan of 150mg for a yeast infection. I found out I was pregnant on 10/21/05. I am freaked out that will cause harm to my baby. Please give me any info you have on this.

Answer
Diflucan is a category C mediction and it can be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the possible risk. There have not been any adequate or well controlled studies in pregnant women. In rats, doses of 50 times the normal human dose have not had any fetal effects. If you only took one Diflucan before you know that you were pregnant, I doubt that it will have any detrimental effects on the baby.
