ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - Early pregnancy- bleeding and Abdominal pain

Expert: Cheri Purpur - 9/23/2004

Question
Hello,

My wife is running on her 7th week.
She had a nasty fall from stair case 5 weeks before.
She had slight bleeding the day before falling. After the day of fall she has started developing occasional sharp pains in her abdomen.

We have taken Ultrasonic scans on 6th and 7th weeks and they indicate normal conditions at this stage.. The foetus is growing and faint heart beat is seen.

Doctor is telling that since there are signs of growth, bleeding could be because of hormonal imbalance and has suggested injections for the same. She has told to wait and watch for next 2 weeks for foetus growth. If it is normal she is telling to continue pregnancy. Otherwise she would suggest D&C.
She is also telling that if at all the foetus was affected by the fall, it would lead to abortion normally at this stage..

1.Our worry is, how good are the chances of a normal pregnancy ?
2. Would be the baby have got affected by the fall ?
3. Is the sharp pain and bleeding due to hormonal imbalance only if Ultrascan indicate everything normal ? Are there any other reasons why this happens ?

Thanks

MAHESH

Answer
Hello Mahesh. A fall of that kind at that early stage of pregnancy is VERY UNLIKELY to have caused ANY damage. The embryo is very well protected. If you want this baby, do NOT be pressured into an abortion. I have very LITTLE faith in ultrasound scans, they are often incorrect. You have a very good chance of a normal pregnancy with a fine healthy baby. The pains are most likely ligaments stretching due to the growing uterus. These pains can be very sudden and sharp but are quite harmless. Hope that helps- Cheri.
