Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 10/10/2005

Question
Hi my name is Jackie and I am 15 years old, I have never had any children before and my last period that I know of for sure is on september 4, 2005 well on September 10, 2005 I had unprotected sex and now Im worried I might be pregnate but On October 3rd, 2005 I thought I had got my period but I realized that it was not as heavy as my usual period I didnt even need to wear a tampon or pad, all I wore was a panty liner, and most of the time the blood would only come out when I wiped myself the color would change from pink, red, and a redish brown, then it was like a light brown, it was slightly shorter than my usual period, my usual period is 5 whole days and this time it was only 4 1/2 days, and the bleeding was not heavy it was light, and I usually have LOTS of blood clots in my usual period, but this time I barley had any at all maybe just like 3 clots and they were very small and mine are usually BIG, and I didnt have any cramps at all. I had also been experiencing some pregnantcy symptoms like I have been going to the restroom a lot more often and, I have been feeling as if I have to throw up but the salava in my mouth would just built up and I wouldnt throw up,I would feel very dizzy, and I have been having cramps on the side of my stomache and and also some cramps on my back, I have had headaches and the viens in my breast have become so much more noticable and I also had this feeling in my stomach as if my stomach was trying to kick me well I would like to know what you think cause im thinking that maybe the bleeding i had was implantation bleeding cause it was just so much more drifferent than my usuall period.

Answer
If your last period started on September 4, then the earliest you could have ovulated would have been on September 17. You could only have become pregnant if you had unprotected sex on September 16,17,18, or 19. You could not have conceived if you had sex earlier than that. Therefore, you did not become pregnant when you had sex on September 10. In addition, you did get your period on October 3, even if it was lighter than usual. It is not important to have clots or to have a heavy period. A period is considered normal if you bleed from one day up to 14 days. If you bleed more than 14 days, it is considered abnormal. It appears that you did, indeed, get your period, so you are not pregnant. The earliest symptoms of pregnancy are breast tenderness, fatigue, and nausea. If youy have any doubts, take a pregnancy test but I do not think you are pregnant;.
