ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - Question

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 3/11/2005

Question
I am 23 years old, I have no children, and the date of the first day of my last menstrual period was February 23, 2005. I keep track of my periods at at the website www.cyclespage.com. According to my chart, I should be ovulating right now. I am experiencing some light bleeding that started last night and is continuing throughout today. I have never done this before. My periods are irregular unless I take birth control, at which point they are very predictable. I do realize that I should go see a doctor (which I do anyway every August for my yearly exam), but I am a college student and have very little money and no medical insurance so I thought I would get your opinion first. Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
It does appear that you are, indeed, ovulating now. It is also common to occasionally have "ovulatory" bleeding that occurs at the time of ovulation and is less than a regular period and is insignificant. Just keep a record of your bleeding and realize that you are probably ovulating at the present time. See if you get your normal period by March 22. If you do, all is fine.
