ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - Sonogram picture?

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 10/9/2005

Question
I had a sonogram picture at 12 weeks... and got to see the baby and the heartbeat ect..
My question is the baby's head was HUGE.. And its not round out all, its more like a triangle shape? Is this normal? The head was bigger than the rest of the body I think!

Answer
At 12 weeks gestation (and for most of the pregnancy) the baby's head is much, much larger than the rest of the body. As the pregnancy continues, the body "catches up" to the size of the head. That is why all fetuses appear to have enlarged heads (like aliens from outer space). They start to look like babies later on. Don't worry.
