ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - Trying to Conceive

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 8/25/2004

Question
Thanks for responding. My doctor found a small cyst on my right ovary in March - in April it was gone. The symptoms I have now are the same as what I felt when I had a cyst in March, but the pain is worst now. I have an appt. w/ my doctor Sept. 7 to re-check. He says Clomid sometimes causes cysts, so I shouldn't be alarmed. But I'm sure I had the cyst before I started Clomid. I also read somewhere that cysts may be a good thing because it's a sign of ovulation. Is this correct? I was afraid since I started bleeding again, it would stop my ovulation. It's not a regular period, but it is heavier than spotting. And it's "everytime" I urinate.

Age:29, 1 child, 8/16/04

I am trying to conceive. My periods have been irreregular since stopping Depro Provero in January 2003. Got last period 8/16/04 - 8/20/04, after taking Provera. Had blood work done on day 3-results were normal. Took Clomid day 3-7. On 8/23/04, I had a light pink discharge after urinating. Today, the bleeding is heavier & I'm sure I feel a cyst on my right ovary. Any idea why I started bleeding again so soon? Do you think I still have a chance to ovulate/conceive this month?
Answer -
If your last period started on August 16, you would have ovulated on August 29. The light pink discharge after you urinated on August 23 may merely be some inflamation of your bladder or the beginning of a urinary tract infection. Why are you sure that you have a cyst on your right ovary? If you believe that you have a cyst, get a sonogram or an examination by your doctor. There is no reason to believe that you will not ovulate this month. Start having sex on August 28,29,30, and 31. Good Luck to you.

Answer
Ovarian cysts come and go and rarely remain over several months. Usually, a cyst pops before the end of your cycle. HOwever, occasionally the cyst can continue to grow and cause pain (especially if it is leaking). Clomid can help ovulation and ovulation does, indeed, cause cysts. YOu should have a sonogram to see if you have another cyst and if it is greater than 5cm. If a cyst is larger than 5cm, it should be removed to avoid torsion of the ovary with pain and the risk of blood clots. If it is less than 5cm, nothing need be done. Burning on urination is a sign of a urinary tract infection. The only way to know if you have an ovarian cyst is with a sonogram.
