Question
Dear dr. rappaport
I was prescribed amoxicillin for 1 wk 3 times a day.(jan 27) i will finishing Feb 2) i ovulate on feb 6. i know that fertilization takes 2 wks after conception to fetilize egg. is this enough time for drug to get out of body. Im nervous and would like your opinion Once again thanks for your service

Answer
First of all, Amoxicillin is perfectly safe for use during pregnancy and it causes no harm to a fetus or to a pregnancy. (It can cause you to develop some diarrhea, though). Secondly, If you have a normal 28 day cycle (from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period) ovulation occurs around cycle day #14. YOu can ONLY become pregnant if you have unprotected sex on cycle day #13,14, 15, or 16. When you ovulate, and have intercourse, the sperm fertilizes the egg within minutes of ejaculation. Then the fertilized egg travels from the end of the fallopian tube to the uterus, where it implants into the endometrium. This take around 8 days after fertilization (conception). In any case, don't worry about the antibiotic. It is totally safe.
