Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 5/22/2004

Question
I am 24 years old and i have a 3 year old little girl. My last period was april 22 2004. My question is what are some reasons of missing a period? I have missed my period this month but i have cramps and it feels like im ready to start but when i check there is nothing there. I have missd periods b4 last year i missed themn for a few months in a row but i never had the cramps or nothing. I do have unprotected sex with mypartner but i have a tilted uterous and have done anything to help the sperm. my old ob gyn told me that i would have to prop my self up with a pillow or try sex another way well i didnt do either of those and still havent had my period.it is only 2 days late. should i be worried?

Answer
The most common cause for missing a period is pregnancy. If your last period started on April 22, you probably ovulated around May 5. You could only have become pregnant if you had unprotected sex on May 4,5,6, or 7. If you did become pregnant on one of those days, a pregnancy test would not show a positive result until 14-21 days later or between May 19-26. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your period. You were due for your period on May 19. Wait until May 26 and repeat a pregnancy test. By the way, even with a tilted uterus (retroverted) you do not have to prop yourself up to allow the sperm to get into the cervix and travel up the fallopian tubes to fertilize the egg. All the organs in the vagina are touching and the sperm find their way to the tubes very easily, whether your uterus is tilted or not. That was an old theory and is not believed to be true anymore. Good Luck. Another cause for a missed period may be anovulation.Sometimes, if you do not ovulate in any particular month, you will not get your period for that month. It does not occur often, but can occur in young women who, occasionally, have some hormonal imbalance.
