ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - what is conization of fetus

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 3/19/2004

Question
what conization of womb

Answer
When we get a slightly abnormal PAP smear, we have to see what the cells of the cervix look like under the microscope. A conization of the cervix (or uterus) is a procedure where a cone-shaped section of the tip of the uterus (cervix) is removed and sent to pathology to be examined for the presence of abnormal cells. A D&C is also usually done at the same time to take a sample of the endometrium (inside of the uterus) to also test for abnormal cells.
