ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - cramping during early pregnancy

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 3/7/2005

Question
I am 31 years old and am pregnant for the first time. I have had
cramping on my left side near my ovaries. It feels like when I
get my period. The cramping usually lasts all day and has lasted
for about 2 weeks. I do not have bleeding. Is this OK?

Answer
In early pregnancy, there is a condition called the "round ligament syndrome" which is caused by stretching of the round ligaments by the growing uterus. This causes pain or a ripping sensation on one side of the abdomen or the other when rising from a sitting position, or getting out of bed, or when suddenly turning while walking. The round ligaments are the ligaments that anchor the uterus to the sidewalls of the abdomen. This pain usually subsides in later pregnancy. To alleviate it, take Tylenol, or a warm shower, or use a heating pad or hot water bottle.
