ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - estrogen levels after clomid

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 7/1/2006

Question
hi the first day of my last menstrual period was wed june the 7th today is cycle day 25. I started clomid for the first time on cd5-cd9 50mg. i had a blood test on cd 21. When i saw the docs secretary to get the results she said that my estrogen levels were 3000(normally its about 1400 she told me) she seemed to think that because the levels were so high there was a good chance that i was pregnant. Id like to bleieve it but im not so sure. Does the clomid cause a higher than normal estrogen leve? Also I started spotting yesterday and its getting heavier today. Can clomid cause spotting and if it is my period starting early does that mean clomids not working properly as its usually a 28 day cycle on clomid I thought. I normally cycle every 28 days. i ovulated on day 13 according to the OPKs which i continued to do till day 18 just in case it was a false reading. are OPKs as accurate on clomid. thanks Monica

Answer
Was the nurse talking about estrogen levels or HCG levels? HCG is the hormone of pregnancy. If it is elevated (3000) it indicates pregnancy. If HCG is present, you are pregnant. If it is negativeve you are not pregnant. Clomid does not raise the estrogen level. I don't know why a nurse would have even done estrogen levels. Usually Clomid will not have any effect until youo aree takinig at least 100mg as a dose. If you are more than 7 days late for your period, take a pregnancy test.
