ObGyn/Pregnancy issues/Feeling movement at 13 weeks?

Ashangelss wrote at 2006-12-05 03:20:11
With my first baby I felt fetal movement at 16 weeks pregnant. I am now 13 weeks and 3 days pregnant and I swear I feel fetal movement. I definitely was not 22 weeks pregnant when I felt the first movements. My doctor confirmed the movements as real at 16 weeks with an ultra sound. So in your case and mine, it may or may not be fetal movement this early, good luck!

Erin wrote at 2006-12-16 19:39:32
I've never heard that you cannot feel fetal movement until 18 weeks (22 for the first baby) this information is just wrong. Fetal movement can be felt from 14 weeks to 22 for the first movements, called quickening. For first pregnancies this can be in the later weeks and for subsequent pregnancies, due to the laxness of your abdominal muscles, and previously stretched uterus it will likely be sooner. Slimmer women may feel movement sooner than overweight women.

In short, it could be your little one moving. There is also a possibility that your dates are off and you're further along than you think.

I totally disagree with this.  I felt movement at 16 weeks with my first (not fluttering, but poking) and at 15 weeks with my second. I did have slightly bigger babies (1st was 8/5 and 2nd was 9/2) so maybe that's why?

MM wrote at 2007-04-24 18:29:15
Its hard to limit that question with such a specific response, saying definitely, 18 weeks is when you feel quickening. Come ON! According to the American Pregnancy Association, you can feel movement (wide range) anywhere starting from 13-16 weeks. Please don't limit such a broad question with such a specific answer. Every pregnancy is different and unique and should be treated as such. I felt quickening in my 13th week. They felt like quick burst of butterfly sensations, much like a twinges. I never ever had these sensations before I became pregnant. Everyone is different

all women are different. 13-16 weeks is average and up to 18 weeks for first time mothers. my first child i felt movement at 16 weeks. my second child 13 weeks. i know it was movement and not gas....a second or 3rd time mom knows.

That is not true, every woman is different. With my first I felt the first kick at 17 weeks. And with my second I felt the first movement at 13 weeks.

It's not true that you don't always feel the baby move til 18 weeks.Every woman is different.I'm sure we can tell the difference between baby's movements and gas.Especially if it's not your first.I feel my baby often and I am almost 13 weeks.(Second baby)I've felt flutters since 9 weeks.Go with your instinct.Mother knows best!

You could very well be feeling your baby!

From my personal experience:

I'm pregnant with my third child right now... with my first I felt movement at 14 weeks, with the 2nd at 11 weeks and with this one at 12 weeks.  With my first I had an anterior (on the front side of your body) placenta so I only felt movement down low and to the side -- even later in pregnancy the movements over my stomach weren't as strong as the ones to the side, up high and down low.  With my son I had a posterior placenta and felt so much more movement than with my first, and I think I felt it much earlier because the placenta wasn't in the way cushioning the movements. With this one, I feel more low and to the sides again - so I'm guessing anterior placenta, but since I know what the movement feels like I was able to identify it earlier than with my first.

I don't doubt you're feeling your baby move, and frankly I think they tell women they won't feel anything until 16/18 weeks so that they aren't calling their dr. every other day wondering if something is wrong!  Enjoy the movements while they are still gentle!

I disagree with the 'expert' on this one. I felt movement with my first at about 13 weeks, and this time I felt my first 'eye twitch' feeling at about 12. Funny that a guy would say so definitively that you CANNOT feel movement that early, when we women know from experience that it's possible.

Jessica wrote at 2009-01-26 19:12:51
You absolutely can feel fetal movements as early as 12 or 13 weeks. Usually this is more common if it is not your first child. While it definitely could be gas, more than likely the regularity you seem to be having with the movements definitely could be attributed to your kicking baby!

nalazimbala wrote at 2009-04-02 01:14:02
Where did you get that you cannot feel movement before 18 weeks gestation? Most prenatal information will tell you that it can be felt anywhere between 13-24 weeks for the first time. First time moms typically don't realize what it is until 17-24, but that doesn't mean that it cannot be felt. I have felt my both of my babies prior to 18 weeks - the first at 17 and the second at 13.

I am 12 weeks with my 3rd child and I am feeling movement in my mid-right abdomen. I have felt it 5 times now and it is pretty strong. Dr. says it is just gas or ligaments/muscles moving. I realize this is too high to be feeling anything, but what I am feeling is strong and definitely feels like fetal kicking or pushing. Has anyone ever heard or felt that this early and so high up?

I am on my 3rd pregnancy. I began feeling my baby move at 11 weeks gestation. Just because a textbook tells us that "we are supposed to or we cannot feel our babies move until week 18-22" that doesn't make it true. Most fetal development descriptions tell you that what they have described is a general outline. Also, it's been said. That with each pregnancy a woman has, her uterus becomes more stretched, thus making it easier to feel the babies movements. Please people, when a woman says that she has felt her baby move for the first time, instead of telling her a textbook says that it's not possible, be happy for her and embrace what she's feeling. And that's all I got to say about that, thank you.

It is different with all women. I believe it just depends on how sensitive you are. With my first pregnancy, I felt him summer salt forward at 12 weeks and didn't feel him again until 18 weeks. Now I am pregnant with my third child and I started feeling this one's little taps at 10 weeks. I know it sounds impossible, but I assure you I did. So, maybe it is true that it depends on how sensitive you are and how strong and big your baby is. Good luck, ladies!

I'm now almost 11 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child, and since I have read that you feel movement earlier with each pregnancy, I simply didn't think it would be possible this early. But today I felt this baby not once or twice, but about five times moving. You know that fluttering feeling? It was awesome.

sueashton wrote at 2011-04-01 10:05:01
You know the difference between gas and a movement if your on number two, three, four ....! I had twins first time around and really can't remember when i started to feel them to be honest as it was 7 years ago now. I'm currently 11 weeks and 4 days and have just felt movement it was like a big jump forward just below my belly button!I am waiting for my first scan next week to tell me if its twins again just a singleton but i think as by the time we are able to make baby's we are fully aware of what feels like gas/wind and what doesn't!

I haven't seen the Dr yet because I had a period in April and they don't think I'm at 10 weeks yet. I think I'm further along and I know for a fact that I can feel movement. It's not a flutter, but a poke in my mid right stomach. You can actually feel a knob or hard spot if you touch it. This is my second child and I know the difference between movement and gas.

I am currently 12 weeks and 3 days pregnant with my 3rd child I started having children when i was a teenager and now at the age of 30 and 12 yrs later Im having my third child. I started to feel fetal movement in my 10th week and I really thought it was gas (due to me not remembering what it feels like) but in the end the DR told me it was indeed the baby moving and kicking so I do say yes these movements can happen to women and the feelings are real.

enjoy the feeling and share it with the kids they love it! Good luck ladies

I'm on my fourth pregnancy now, and I'm 10 weeks!!!I swear i felt the baby a couple of times!!!I know it's not gas because it wasnt in my intestines,it was in my uterus. I can feel a gas bubble circle around in an S pattern, lol. I had an emergeny c sec with my first pregnancy, and i always felt more sensitive since. My second pregnancy i felt my son at 13 weeks, for a fact (confirmed with the ultrasound)i know my body, lol. Oh yeah and i'm a thin woman.

I am barely 12 weeks pregnant with my 7th baby. I have been feeling STRONG movements for about a week! I agree with all the other moms comments. DR's don't always know best. My Dr kept telling me I wasn't pregnant until my 8th week of pregnancy! Despite 6 positive hpts and 2 positive blood tests. She said If she can't see the fetus then it isn't a "viable" pregnancy. At 8 weeks JR was finally visible, dancing and kicking, with a strong bpm of 160! I didn't need a "licensed professional" to tell me what my heart already knew...I WAS pregnant!

I am about 13 1/2 weeks along with my second child, and I know for sure that I am feeling fetal movement.

Sheila wrote at 2012-04-28 17:11:42
I am 14 weeks along and this is my 3rd child. The reason I'm reading this is because I wanted to know if this is indeed movement and now I feel as if it is:) Thanks!!!! Such a sweet feeling! I feel little kicks several times a day and it started a few days ago.

I am in my 12th week of my 5th pregnancy. I have been feeling movement for about a week. It has been about 7 years since my last pregnancy so i wasn't sure as to the source. I had an ultrasound just yesterday and the baby was so active the tech had a hard time getting the heart rate and pictures to measure. I have not seen any movement like this before with any of my other children. I rarely listen to what most of what these so called experts say as they do not have the hands on life experience that mothers have. The knowledge comes from each other.

I am 12 weeks with my third child and my weight is in preportion to my frame, I have been feeling definate movements since last week, although its been 17 years since my last baby there is definatly no mistaking it now. So ladies all R experiences are unique.

haha, can't believe this guy is an M.D. He says no movements until 18w, 22w with the first baby. I felt movements at 14w with my first baby. By 18w you could not only feel the movements from the outside if you put a hand on my belly but you could even SEE them. By 22w you could see them through clothing. So...definitely not gas! hahahaha. Also they were happening at least once per minute by that time. I know I'm an outlier in this regard but to say you can't feel movement until "at least" 18w is way off.

I came to this thread because I was curious about the earliest stages of movement. I'm pregnant with my second and wondering whether what I'm feeling now is movement. I will just have to wait and see if it intensifies and remains steady otherwise. I'm not quite 12w, so it seems too early, but it's interesting to see so many women here who felt movement by 12-13w so I know this could be coming soon even if it's not here now.
